May is Wildfire Prevention Month and a reminder to prepare. The Maui wildfires of August 2023 became the deadliest wildfires in the United States in more than 100 years. Nearly 100 people lost their lives, thousands of homes and buildings were destroyed, and entire communities were forever changed. The tragedy served as a reminder that hotter temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds continue increasing wildfire risks across Hawaiʻi every year.
What You Can Do Now
Prepare a Go Bag with food, water, medications, important documents, flashlights, chargers, and pet supplies
Clear dry grass, vegetation, and debris around your home
Create a family evacuation plan and meeting location
Sign up for HNL Alert and monitor emergency notifications
Check on kūpuna, neighbors, and individuals who may need assistance during emergencies
Residents are also encouraged to:
Avoid parking vehicles on dry grass
Never discard cigarettes outdoors
Report fires immediately
Stay informed during Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches
