Speeding on Kahuanui Street
Speeding motorists have created safety hazards along Kahuanui Street, particularly between Waipahu District Park and the intersection of Kahuanui and Kahualiʻi Streets.
After a resident brought the issue to our attention, our office contacted the City administration and requested assistance from the Honolulu Police Department (HPD). Officers conducted multiple traffic checks and, although they observed no violations, deployed a speed monitoring trailer to encourage drivers to slow down.
We appreciate HPD’s efforts to improve traffic safety in the neighborhood.

Noisy Moped Riders at Honowai Neighborhood Park
Residents near Honowai Neighborhood Park have experienced repeated noise disturbances from a group of moped riders gathering in the area.
Our office alerted HPD, which confirmed previous reports involving the group. Although officers did not locate the riders during their investigation, they encouraged residents to call 911 immediately when disturbances occur.
We encourage neighbors to report illegal activity to help maintain a safe and peaceful community.

Uprooted Tree Stump and Damaged Sidewalk on Kahuanui Street
An uprooted tree stump and raised sidewalk slab along Kahuanui Street have obstructed the pedestrian walkway, creating a hazard for residents.
Following a constituent’s request, our office submitted photographs and notified the City administration. The Division of Urban Forestry (DUF) will remove the tree stump before the Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM) repairs the damaged sidewalk.
The request remains in progress as the City coordinates the work.

Abandoned Vehicles on Hoʻomakoa Street
Five to six vehicles left along Hoʻomakoa Street for extended periods have occupied neighborhood parking spaces and obstructed pedestrian access.
In response to a resident’s complaint, our office contacted the City administration and HPD. Officers issued four citations, towed three vehicles and marked another vehicle as abandoned.
These enforcement actions helped address the parking problems and improve pedestrian access for neighborhood residents.

Crosswalk Safety Improvements Requested on Leoku Street
Parked vehicles along Leoku Street near the Shops at West Loch Station can obstruct drivers’ views of pedestrians entering crosswalks, creating potentially dangerous conditions.
A constituent recommended installing flashing pedestrian beacons to improve visibility and requested an additional crosswalk to address the considerable distance between existing crossings. The resident reported frequently seeing pedestrians cross outside designated areas.
Our office forwarded both requests to the City administration for evaluation. We will continue working with City officials to identify improvements that make this busy roadway safer for pedestrians and motorists.

Homeless Encampment Near St. Joseph’s School
Disruptive behavior associated with a homeless encampment immediately outside St. Joseph’s School campus prompted the principal to seek assistance from Honolulu Police and our office.
Our office followed up with HPD, which had already met with the principal and cleared the encampment. Officers also indicated plans to maintain a presence near the campus to discourage further disturbances and ensure safety of students and staff.
We appreciate HPD’s continued efforts to maintain a safe learning environment for students, teachers and families.
